The Council is offering an excellent initiative on training how to involve young people in the running and shaping of estates. Ethelburga should have somebody participate in this training. This person could then assume responsibility for liaising with and involving kids and young people.

Volunteers please!!

Dear RA Chair/ Secretary/ Treasurer

Re: Involving Young People on Council Estates

The Housing Department is looking at ways to better involve young people in the participation structure and would like to invite the Chair or a representative from your committee to some training on Youth Participation.

The Council in line with the Coalition Government supports the view that children and young people should be given opportunities to express their opinion in matters that affect their lives to help develop the skills, confidence and self-esteem they will need for the future. One of the Housing Department’s key actions in the Children, Young People and Families Action Plan 2010/11 – 2013/14 is to:

‘Improve communication, participation and consultation with harder to reach groups concentrating on younger people on council estates’.

Residents’ Associations are key to achieving this action and therefore the Department strongly encourages you to attend a free workshop on ‘How to Involve Young People’.

The training will look at the advantages and disadvantages of involving young people in Residents’ Associations. You will be guided through national legislation and look at practical examples of involving young people directly, through forums and indirectly, through social media etc. The training will provide you with support on how to involve young people and will have realistic outcomes that are easy and free to implement.

It has been organised by Antonia Dixey, Youth Participation Officer, Integrated Youth Support Service and will be held at:

Integrated Youth Support Service

Training and Resource Centre

St Faith’s, Alma Road

London,

SW18 1AQ

The proposed dates for the training are:

Tuesday 28th June 4 – 6pm or 6.30 – 8.30pm

Thursday 30th June 4 – 6pm or 6.30 – 8.30pm

Monday 4th July 11am – 1pm

Please could you contact me either via email or telephone to let me know your preferred date of attendance. Please contact me by Wednesday 22nd June and I will endeavour to ensure you can attend the training on you preferred date.

Yours faithfully

Kay Willman

Policy and Performance Officer
